I’ve now been at this current job for about 4 years and am looking for something similar but closer to a major city. I also make more money now at my current job than the previous, more creative job. The biggest difference between the two jobs however is that since I basically just do “busy work” at my current job, I find that I’m more motivated to work on self projects/illustration outside of work at home. Occasionally I’ll have the freedom to create my own designs/logos/signs but for the most part I’m using customer supplied logos and artwork 90% of the time. It’s a much less creative job than my previous one - I essentially work in illustrator and photoshop to put together mock-ups for exterior and interior signage. It was a young, fun and creative environment to be in but a lot of the days were very draining as I was constantly pressured to come up with new ad campaigns and in-store product designs which ultimately led me to become burnt out frequently after work.įast forward to now I currently work as a graphic designer for a commercial sign company. My first job was as an in-house graphic designer for a national restaurant chain. It is important to consider the placement of the type and how you break lines, what words you make larger or smaller and how the type flows within the illustration and in the reader’s eye.īirthday (lots of Bdays), Blank, Thank You, Thinking of You, Encouragement, Get Well, Sympathy, Just for Fun, Friendship, Congrats, Wedding/Love, New Baby, Anniversary, New Home, Engagement, Retirement,Įaster, Good Luck, Hello Spring, Val’s Day, Mom’s/Dad’s Day, Graduation, Fall Seasonal, Christmas & Hanukkah It also really helps a card design when the type is well integrated with the image - stylistically, through illustration and or placement of appropriate fonts, colors used etc. It’s good practice to include visual interest on the top third of a card while imagining how it sits on the store shelf. We lean toward vibrant/bold/multi-color/high-contrast palettes and art that has some dimension or layering, humor, playful lettering, etc. We think of our cards like billboards that should draw people in right away and stand out from all of the other cards on the rack. Flat, monochromatic designs don’t stand out on shelf as much. We look for designs that are dynamic and graphically strong.
